When carrying out garden work, you expect to come across long-rooted weeds, worms wriggling in the dirt, and the odd lump of clay. But one man got more than he bargained for when hediscovered a "spooky box" hidden under some paving stones while moving things around in his garden.
Sharing his discovery online, he said: "I found a cool time capsule/memorial box while doing some gardening. I was pulling up some slabs in the garden, and after shifting some gravel and dirt, I found this spooky little box. Not 100% sure what to make of it, but it's got some cool little mementos and a lovely drawing of a young woman with 'Odette' written on the back." He says thebox has suffered "a decent amount of fire damage" but somehow managed to hold up well against the elements over the years.
Wanting to gift it to the family of whoever planted it there around 90-odd years ago, he said: "The only identifiable info is 'Odette' written on the back of the drawing. But the pocket companion was published in 1939."
Commenting on his post, one user said: "Maybe it's the combination of wax, burn marks, and that ominous-looking symbol, but I'm pretty sure you've just unleashed an apocalypse-style curse."
In an update, he shared how he managed to track down the previous homeowner and got in touch with their relative, called Lyn.
He came to learn the box was buried by Lyn's late mother’s sister – but she knew nothing about it until now.
He added: "Lyn moved into the house for a time. She said she didn't feel comfortable there. The house was originally owned by her mum's sister, Odette, who lived there until her death in the early '80s.

"Lyn recognised the sketch, necklaces, and butterfly brooch as Odette's. She didn’t know much about her, as she apparently kept to herself. Lyn also mentioned that she knows Odette was widowed for some time and had no children.
"Both her mum and Odette were practicing Wiccans but fell out frequently over the church. The church disbanded when Lyn was a teenager, sometime in the '60s.
"It was run out of Odette’s home and only consisted of four other women. I showed her the articles, and she said that, as Odette was her mum’s only sister, she must have been married to the man whose grave was sadly robbed — or to the brother also mentioned.
"She thinks she has some of Odette’s belongings among her mum’s."
After learning as much as possible about the mysterious box, they agreed to rebury it and met up at the property to pick out the perfect spot.
Commenting on his update, one user said: "I think it’s great that you are going to rebury the box. What a nice little adventure for you!"
Another user added: "Thank you for following up! Please do keep us informed of any further developments."
